![]() ![]() Michael Straczynski’s character-building work on “Spider-Man.” A relatively strong offering from Mark Millar, a writer whose work I’m rarely a fan of, I found the series itself compelling but problematic, standing the strongest when it builds on some of the best work Marvel was publishing at the time, like Ed Brubaker’s revolutionary run on “Captain America” and J. Looking back on the series after so many years, I found many of my initial impressions unchanged. In that time, the groundbreaking massive crossover series has become a recognized classic, and had a profound lasting effect on the comics industry as a whole, for better or for worse. ![]() ![]() It’s probably no coincidence that it’s also the ten year anniversary of when “Civil War” first broke out in the pages of Marvel Comics. “Captain America: Civil War” opens in theaters this weekend, and a long-anticipated sequel to the original source material kicks off on Saturday with some of the special titles Marvel is releasing for Free Comic Book Day, which celebrates the medium and the specialty shops that keep it alive on the first Saturday of every May. ![]()
